I had never read this Andy Warhol quote before.
Business art is the step that comes after Art. I started as a commercial artist, and I want to finish as a business artist. After I did the thing called “art” or whatever it’s called, I went into business art. I wanted to be an Art Businessman or a Business Artist. Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. During the hippie era people put down the idea of business—they’d say, “Money is bad,” and “Working is bad,” but making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.
It doesn’t make me reconsider his art, I’m not an especially big fan. But it does make me reconsider him as a person. His iconic depiction is as a bit of a flake, but reading what he really said ….. not just this, but other things that come to mind, reminds me that he was a very savvy, clever person. I’m not sure I want to invest a great deal of time getting to know him, since the art I’ve seen doesn’t do much for me. But I’ll file this away for future use – if the opportunity presents itself.
An interesting short article about this (where I pulled the quote from) can be found here.
