Johnny Cash

I grew up listening to Johnny Cash’s Live from San Quentin. I didn’t listen to him much once I moved out and went to college.
But in the last 10 years I’ve come to find him such a compelling singer. The work he did with Rick Rubin is just wonderful. I listen to his versions of NIN’s Hurt and God’s Gonna Cut You Down.

I can’t tell if he’s off key or nailing the notes. There’s something about his voice that makes those things almost irrelevant. Would I feel the same way if I just came across him without any prior knowledge? How can you evaluate that?
